Joel Taylor is a mo-fo of a player. Very dynamic and has a bag full of drumming vocabulary both with grooves and chops. He's recorded with a friend, Brian Bromberg for years. He's on a lot of his CD's (if not all of them). Brian says he's one of the most amazing sight readers he's ever seen, as is the reason why I wanted to study with him. I almost got together with him for a lesson, but he and I couldn't get our times together. Brian gave me a copy of a Japan release of Brian's "Bass Ackwards". It's an amazing CD. Maybe Steve can upload the solo on the website for people to hear, I have a pre-production copy and the "retail" one. It's a rock project that Brian has been wanting to do for sometime. Brian plays all the bass parts and then plays what sounds like lead guitar with his picallo bass. The music resembles Joe Satriani or Eric Johnson with way more chops (no offense to Eric or Satch). Of course Joel is on the whole CD. And about the Joel playing with his shoes off??.... it's true and very common of him. I saw a gig not too long ago at the Baked Potato that Joel played with Brandon Fields. He played the whole gig bare footed. Blew some major chops all the while playing very tastily. I said to myself, "man!....... this guys got some major chops!". I feel his is one of the majorly underated drummers via printed publications and the mainstream. I don't know of any recordings that could really show his playing abilities, I think you've really got to see this cat live.
ps...... Since many people here seem to be into Vinnie alot, Brian told me that he would be recording Randy Waldmans new CD with Vinnie at his studio in N. Hollywood called B2 ("B" squared). I hope to witness some of the recording process because I think Brians car is going to need some "fixin" right around that time. "wink, wink,..... know whaddi mean"??
